The lodging and hospitality industry is a fast-paced and in-demand career path, particularly in Middle Tennessee, as the hospitality and tourism industry is Middle Tennessee’s second largest employer. The Hotel Management Technical Certificate offers both new and current hotel and lodging employees the opportunity to advance their careers and move into higher paying positions within the industry. Completion of this Technical Certificate will empower you with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed and a Certificate of Apprenticeship from the US Department of Labor.

Graduates of the program should be able to demonstrate:

  • Computer/technology skills to include hotel operations software, email, spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, and basic financial software
  • Knowledge of and ability to greet guests and provide customer and personal services
  • Ability to communicate and interact with guests, customers, co-workers, supervisors, and management
  • Ability to properly document and record information necessary to the guest experience
  • Understanding of the relationship between and among the various departments in a hotel and how each impacts the guest experience
  • Ability to make sound judgments and decisions and solve problems while providing guest service and in employee interactions
  • Management of material resources to include inventory, ordering, receiving, and storing materials required in a hotel operation
  • Understanding of and ability to evaluate and perform public safety and security measures

Hotel Supervision Apprenticeship Program


The Hotel Supervision Apprenticeship Program is available through Nashville State Community College. The Hotel Supervision Apprenticeship is based on the American Hotel and Lodging Association Educational Institute (AHLEI) Lodging Manager Registered Apprenticeship Program and consists of the 29-credit hour technical certificate and 2000 hours of on-the-job paid learning at an approved hotel or lodging facility. Successful completion of the Hotel Supervision Apprenticeship and the Hotel Management Technical Certificate will result in the awarding of the technical certificate from NSCC, the AHLEI Certified Hospitality Supervisor, Certified Front Desk Representative, the Certified Guestroom Attendant and/or a series of other certifications/designations, and a Certificate of Apprenticeship from the US Department of Labor.

Grading Policy


A grade of “C” or above must be earned in all Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management courses prior to graduation.

Transfer/Advising


This certificate is designed so that a student can apply all of the required courses toward the A.A.S. degree in Hospitality Management with a concentration in Hotel Management. A student who plans to apply the certificate toward an A.A.S. degree should consult his/her advisor about articulation options.  Lodging Supervisor apprentices can apply their 1000-hours of on-the-job learning to the 4000-hour Lodging Manager Apprenticeship Program if approved by their employer.

  • HMGT 2805   - Convention Management and Service 3 Credits
  • HMGT 2910   – Hospitality Management Internship 2 Credits

Total Certificate Requirements: 29 Credits


NOTE


Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students either demonstrate the appropriate skill levels in math, reading, and/or writing before enrolling in college-level courses or enroll in appropriate co-requisite experiences with college-level courses to develop competency in those skills while performing college-level work. ACT/SAT scores, classic ACCUPLACER test scores, next-generation ACCUPLACER test scores, or other relevant information determine whether a student needs to enroll in co-requisite courses in math, reading, and/or writing (English).
