The Accounting program at Nashville State Community College provides an innovative and robust accounting program in a diverse and inclusive environment that equitably prepares graduates to successfully fulfill their academic and professional aspirations. 

The Accounting Clerk Technical Certificate provides foundational skills to prepare students for entry-level accounting clerk positions. The program includes courses that provide the student with basic accounting skills as well as a solid working knowledge of business application software. This certificate can be completed in two semesters when following the recommended course schedule and sequence. All courses in this certificate will apply toward the 30-hour Accounting Technical Certificate and the Accounting AAS Degree.

Graduates of this program should be able to:

  • Explain the role of accounting in business and how accounting information systems are used to gather, summarize, report, and analyze financial data.
  • Perform the steps in the accounting cycle, complying with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Apply knowledge of business and accounting application software to solve a wide range of business problems.

Grading Policy


A grade of “C” or above must be earned in all Accounting (ACCT) courses to meet requirements for graduation.

Transfer/Advising


The Accounting Clerk Technical Certificate is designed to prepare a student for entry-level employment upon graduation. This certificate is designed so that a student can apply all of the required courses toward the Nashville State 30-hour Accounting Technical Certificate and/or the Nashville State A.A.S. degree in Accounting. A student who plans to apply the certificate toward an A.A.S. degree should consult his/her advisor about articulation options.

  • BUSN 1360  -Software Applications for Business 3 credits
  • ACCT 1371  - Accounting Spreadsheets I 3 credits
  • ACCT 2382  -Accounting Systems Applications 3 credits
  • ADMN 1310  -Business Communications 3 credits

Total Certificate Requirements: 18 Credits
