Graduation Requirements
Additional Requirements for Education Programs:
Students who intend to take the Praxis Core exam are encouraged to take MATH 1420 or Math 1530 to prepare. While a C or better is not required to receive an AST, most 4-year institutions require a C or better in Math courses.
Additional Degree Requirements:
1. Attainment of a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
2. ACT composite score of 21 (or SAT score of 1080) or higher or successful completion of approved standardized examination. (Praxis Core) for admission to the university’s College of Education.
3. Satisfactory ratings on an index of suitability for the teaching profession (disposition forms).
Transfer/Advising
Students should consult frequently with their advisors to insure completion of all requirements for this degree. Failure to do so could result in a loss of credits in the transfer process. Students transferring to a public university in Tennessee may need to meet additional requirements to gain admittance to the university.
Notes:
Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students either demonstrate the appropriate skill levels in math, reading, and/or writing before enrolling in college-level courses or enroll in appropriate co-requisite experiences with college-level courses to develop competency in those skills while performing college-level work. ACT/SAT scores, classic ACCUPLACER test scores, next-generation ACCUPLACER test scores, or other relevant information determine whether a student needs to enroll in co-requisite courses in math, reading, and/or writing (English).
* This course is part of the general education core.
MTSU requires a 22 on the ACT.
1. Students should confer with their advisor or a representative of the university to which they intend to transfer to determine the recommended history courses.
2. PHYS or CHEM are recommended. Students who intend to transfer to UTC should take either a calculus-based or non-calculus-based Physics sequence. UTM requires Chemistry sequence 1010/1020 and PHYS sequence. UoM also requires Intro to Biology and lab in place of PHYS 1040. Students interested in transferring to APSU should take CSCI 1010/1011 or CSCI 2000 or a similar Intro Programming course.
Students who intend to transfer to MTSU, ETSU, or UTC, secondary education program should follow the Mathematics AS TTP and not the AST TTP. ETSU, and UTC recommend and MTSU requires that students take education courses after transfer. Students interested in transferring to UTK have two options: a degree and teaching licensure. Option 1: BS majoring in Math with a minor in Math Education - do not use this TTP; follow the Math TTP. Option 2 BS in Education with a concentration in Math. If you are interested in this option, follow this Secondary Education -Math TTP.
