The NSCC Correctional Officer Program is to teach students a broad range of courses designed to equip jailers with the knowledge and understanding of inmate processing, maintaining order in the jail and invoking disciplinary measures when necessary. In addition, a jailer may also perform cell searches for drugs and other contraband, inspect the facility for cleanliness and stand guard during exercise periods. This training program, which may be completed over two semesters, provides jailers with knowledge of emergency procedures, mental health and first aid, use of force, investigations, communications, pertinent law, life skills, and many other aspects of the corrections field.
Graduates of the program will be able to:

Demonstrate a proficiency in high liability critical job areas such as firearms, defensive tactics, and first aid for criminal justice first-responders.

Demonstrate an understanding beyond the basics of the fundamental skills required for an officer entering the corrections profession.

Demonstrate proper and professional discipline and personal accountability expected in the corrections profession.

Transfer/Advising
The certificate is designed so that a student can apply all of the required courses toward the Nashville State A.A.S. degree in Law Enforcement with a concentration in Police Administration. A student who plans to apply the certificate toward the Law Enforcement AAS degree Police Administration Concentration should consult his/her advisor about articulation options.
