Technical Certificate

The Law Office Technology Technical Certificate is designed for attorneys, current paralegals, and students within the paralegal studies program to prepare students for the technology requirements for law offices, courts, and legal departments within a corporation. The program includes a core of legal technology courses that develop skills in software applications commonly used in business, law office technology applications used in the legal community, eDiscovery methods, and the ethics involved with technology. The Law Office Technology Technical Certificate is not an ABA approved program and is not designed to train you to be a paralegal.
Graduates of the certificate should be able to demonstrate:
- The ability to use Microsoft Office applications efficiently
- Competency in commonly used legal technology applications
- A working knowledge of eDiscovery software and the importance of preserving information correctly
- Knowledge of ethical principles that govern technology and the law office environment.

Related Information
The Law Office Technology Technical Certificate may be earned by students currently in the Paralegal Studies program at NSCC and those who are already working in the legal field. Students who are interested in just one or two courses instead of the full certificate should consult with the Program Director for more information.
Transfer/Advising
A student who plans to apply the certificate toward an A.A.S. degree should consult his/her advisor about articulation options.
Course Requirements
Select one from the following courses:
- CITC 1303 – Database Concepts 3 Credits
- CITC 1330 – Microsoft Desktop Operating Systems 3 Credits
- ACCT 1010 - Principles of Accounting I 3 Credits
Total Certificate Requirements: 18 Credits
NOTE:
Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students either demonstrate the appropriate skill levels in math, reading, and/or writing before enrolling in college-level courses or enroll in appropriate co-requisite experiences with college-level courses to develop competency in those skills while performing college-level work. ACT/SAT scores, classic ACCUPLACER test scores, next-generation ACCUPLACER test scores, or other relevant information determine whether a student needs to enroll in co-requisite courses in math, reading, and/or writing (English).
