NOTE: In compliance with Tennessee Board of Regents, the AAS General Technology Degree has been restructured. The degree will no longer include concentrations in Business and Technology, Effective Fall 2016.

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in General Technology prepares students for unique positions in the workplace for which specified degree programs do not currently exist. It is not intended for large-scale application, but is to be used to meet customized, industry-specific needs and/or unique academic and career goals identified by the student. The program consists of a common core of General Education and major core courses selected from the Major Field Core of two (2) existing academic programs, the remaining subject-specific courses selected from those same programs are to be clarified in an individualized curriculum established with guidance from an assigned advisor.

The flexible design of the degree allows students to focus on those unique skillsets identified by employers as essential for a particular workplace. If the student has a unique combination of experiences or a unique career goal that has the potential of enhance employment opportunities, this may also lead to a specialized unique curriculum. The limitation of the curriculum to two (2) program libraries is designed to ensure that students have the proper depth of experience, training, and skills to begin work in the chosen field upon successful completion of their customized program of study.

Degree Program Requirements

General Education: 15 Credits

ENGL 1010 - English Composition I* 3 Credits
MATH 1130 - College Algebra* OR MATH 1630 - Finite Mathematics* 3 Credits
ECON 2010 - Macroeconomics* (Social Science Elective) 3 Credits
SPCH 1010 - Fundamentals of Speech Comm* 3 Credits
ART 1030 - Art Appreciation* OR MUS 1030 - Music Appreciation* (Humanities Elective) 3 Credits

Major Field Core

Minimum 18 credit hours from the major field core of any two existing degree or certificate programs.

The 18 credit hours may be defined in various ways from the two programs. However, a minimum of 6 credit hours must come from one program with the remainder coming from the major field of the other program.

Completion Pathway Courses: the remaining 27 credit hours will be chosen from the same 2 programs.

Total Required – Associate’s Degree: 60 Credits

Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students either demonstrate the appropriate skill levels in math, reading, and/or writing before enrolling in college-level courses or enroll in appropriate co-requisite experiences with college-level courses to develop competency in those skills while performing college-level work. ACT/SAT scores, COMPASS test scores, or other relevant information determine whether a student needs to enroll in co-requisite courses in math, reading, and/or writing (English).
