The Horticulture curriculum prepares students for a variety of employment opportunities in the Green Industry. The program includes technical knowledge and hands-on skills, learning to implement a variety of horticultural tasks, and instruction in high-quality service that meets the standard of the industry.

Graduates of the program should be able to:

Identify and appropriately use landscape materials;
Design and construct residential and recreational landscapes;
Maintain residential, commercial and recreational landscapes;
Identify and control plant pests and diseases, including the proper use of pesticides; and
Learn management techniques to operate a horticultural business.

Transfer/Advising

This certificate is designed so that a student can apply all of the required courses towards a Nashville State A.A.S. degree in General Technology with a focus in Horticulture. For a student who plans to apply the certificate towards an A.S. university parallel degree, the student should consult his/her advisor about transferability of courses.

Two tracks are available: the Landscaping Track or Landscaping Design Track

Landscaping Track

HORT 1410 - Arboriculture 3 Credits

Landscape Design Track

HORT 1120 - Landscape Design 3 Credits

Note:

One internship is required for graduation. Internships may be taken during the fall, spring, or summer semesters.

Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students demonstrate the appropriate skill levels before enrolling in college-level courses. ACT/SAT scores, COMPASS test scores, or other relevant information determines whether a student needs to enroll in Learning Support courses in reading, writing, and/or math. After completing the required Learning Support course(s), a student may enroll in college-level courses.
