Health Sciences A.S.

Graduates of this program should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply critical thinking skills
  • Write clear, well-organized documents.
  • Communicate effectively in personal and professional situations.
  • Know how to locate, evaluate, and use information sources.
  • Understand basic math and scientific terms/concepts and procedures/processes.

All pathways listed below lead to an Associates of Science degree. Each pathway provides specific course guidance based upon student goals.  

  1. BSN Transfer Nursing : Designed for students who plan to apply to a four year nursing program.  

  1. Belmont/NSCC Nursing Partnership: Designed for students who plan to apply to Belmont University as a partnership student. 

  1. Nursing: Designed for students who plan to apply to the NSCC nursing program. 

  1. Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA): Designed for students who plan to apply to the NSCC OTA program.  

  1. Surgical Technology: Designed for students who plan to apply to the NSCC Surgical Technology Program. 

Please review the appropriate advising sheet and review information available on each programs website to ensure completion of required courses prior to applying to your desired program.

Humanities and/or Fine Arts - 9 Credits


(a minimum of 3 must be from a literature class)

Social/Behavioral Sciences - 6 Credits

Natural Sciences - 8 Credits

General Education Total - 41 Credits


Required: NSCC 1010 - First Year Experience 1 Credit

Listed below are variations that reflect the Health Science A.S. pathway chosen.

1) BSN Nursing, Nursing A.A.S., or Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) A.A.S. (61 credit hours)


2) Belmont BSN Nursing Pathway (63 credit hours)


*one humanities of gen ed will be specified as PHIL 2200

3) Surgical Technology A.A.S. (61 Credit Hours)

Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students either demonstrate the appropriate skill levels in math, reading, and/or writing before enrolling in college-level courses or enroll in appropriate co-requisite experiences with college-level courses to develop competency in those skills while performing college-level work. ACT/SAT scores, classic ACCUPLACER test scores, next-generation ACCUPLACER test scores, or other relevant information determine whether a student needs to enroll in co-requisite courses in math, reading, and/or writing (English).

  • The University of Tennessee, Knoxville does not accept transfer students. Nursing students are admitted in the freshman year at UTK.
  • Community college students may also pursue various RN to BSN programs as a means of attaining the BSN degree. These programs assume the completion of the Associate of Applied Science degree with a major in nursing, licensure as a Registered Nurse, and fulfillment of other criteria. Information concerning these programs is available in university catalogs.
  • Students who plan to attend the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee, Martin are strongly encouraged to complete BIOL 2230  (Microbiology) and CHEM 1110  (General Chemistry I) before transferring to these institutions.
