Associate of Science in Teaching (A.S.T.) Pre-K – 3rd Curriculum

The Associate of Science in Teaching (A.S.T.) Degree is designed as a transfer degree for students who wish to pursue a career in early childhood education teaching children in Pre-K through third grade in public and private schools. The graduate with an A.S.T. degree will have completed the first two years of a four-year degree that is required for teacher certification in early childhood education in Tennessee. A student who completes all the courses listed in this Tennessee Transfer Pathway will earn an A.S.T. in Pre-K – 3rd grade at NSCC. A student with an A.S.T. is prepared to interview and be accepted into the university’s teacher education program. It is important to contact your selected transfer university as early as possible.

Graduates of the program should be able to:

  • Transfer to a four-year university to earn a degree in early childhood Pre-K – 3rd grade; and
  • Meet requirements for admission into teacher education programs for Pre-K – 3rd licensure.

Admission Requirements

Students must meet regular degree-seeking admission requirements for the Associate of Science in Teaching degree.

Graduation Requirements

To earn the A.S.T. degree, the student must:

  • Successfully complete the required course of study as outlined in the catalog;
  • Attain a 2.75 cumulative grade point average;
  • Successfully complete the CORE Exam or have a 21 on the ACT or 1020 on the SAT (upon first-time admittance to college); and
  • Receive satisfactory ratings on an index of suitability for the teaching profession.

Transfer/Advising

Students should consult frequently with their advisors to insure completion of all requirements for this degree. Failure to do so could result in a loss of credits in the transfer process.

Humanities – 9 Credits


Mathematics – 3 Credits


  • Any approved general education Math course* 3 Credits***

Natural Sciences (must include lab) – 8 Credits


  • Any approved Biological/Life Sciences general education courses* 4 Credits
  • Any approved Biological/Life Sciences general education courses* 4 Credits

Social Sciences – 6 Credits


History – 6 Credits


  • Any approved general education History course* 3 Credits
  • Any approved general education History course* 3 Credits

Total Required – Associate Degree: 63 Credits


* This course is part of the general education core.

**Neither University of Memphis nor UT Knoxville does not has Dev of Exceptional Children in its Pre-K – 3 Curriculum and students transferring to either University of Memphis or UT Knoxville will have to take one other course after transfer.

***For transfer to APSU, ETSU, UM, UTC, UTK MATH 1530  is required.  At UTM and TSU, MATH 1130  is required.

****Students who plan to transfer to UT Knoxville should take an intermediate foreign language instead of MATH 1410  ; University of Memphis does not require completion of MATH 1410.

*****Students who plan to transfer to ETSU should take EDUC 2210  Education Psychology instead of MATH 1420  .

Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students either demonstrate the appropriate skill levels in math, reading, and/or writing before enrolling in college-level courses or enroll in appropriate co-requisite experiences with college-level courses to develop competency in those skills while performing college-level work. ACT/SAT scores, classic ACCUPLACER test scores, next-generation ACCUPLACER test scores, or other relevant information determine whether a student needs to enroll in co-requisite courses in math, reading, and/or writing (English).
