Community College Area of Emphasis: Secondary Mathematics A.S.T. Degree

The Associate of Science in Teaching (A.S.T.) Degree is designed as a transfer degree for students who wish to pursue a career in secondary Mathematics education teaching in public and private schools. The graduate with an A.S.T. degree will have completed the first two years of a four-year degree that is required for teacher certification in secondary education in Tennessee. Students who earn the A.S.T. can transfer to a state universities and are prepared to interview and be accepted into the university’s teacher education program. The A.S.T. degree courses are likely to transfer but are not guaranteed outside the state university system. It is always best to contact your selected transfer university as early as possible.

Graduates of the program should be able to:

  • Transfer to a four-year university to earn a degree in secondary Mathematics education; and
  • Meet requirements for admission into teacher education programs licensure.

Admission Requirements


Students must meet regular degree-seeking admission requirements for the Associate of Science in Teaching degree.

Graduation Requirements


To earn the A.S.T. degree, the student must:

  • Successfully complete the required course of study as outlined in the catalog;
  • Attain a 2.75 cumulative grade point average;
  • Successfully complete the CORE Exam or have a 21 on the ACT or 1020 on the SAT (upon first-time admittance to college); and
  • Receive satisfactory ratings on an index of suitability for the teaching profession.

Transfer/Advising


Students should consult frequently with their advisors to insure completion of all requirements for this degree. Failure to do so could result in a loss of credits in the transfer process.

Natural Sciences - 8 Credits

Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students either demonstrate the appropriate skill levels in math, reading, and/or writing before enrolling in college-level courses or enroll in appropriate co-requisite experiences with college-level courses to develop competency in those skills while performing college-level work. ACT/SAT scores, classic ACCUPLACER test scores, next-generation ACCUPLACER test scores, or other relevant information determine whether a student needs to enroll in co-requisite courses in math, reading, and/or writing (English).

 * This course is part of the general education core.

MTSU and UTC require a 22 on the ACT.

UM requires two of the following three courses to satisfy the social behavioral science requirement: Survey of World Regions, Intro to Cultural Geography, or American Government; UM also requires intro to biology and lab in place of PHYS 1040.

**Students should confer with their advisor or a representative of the university to which they intend to transfer to determine the recommended history courses. Students who intend to transfer to UTK should take 6 credit hours of a non-U.S. History sequence to fulfill the History requirements. UTC requires that one of the History courses be a non-Western culture class.

***PHYS or CHEM are recommended. Students who intend to transfer to UTC should take either calculus-based or non-calculus-based Physics sequence. UTM requires an additional Chemistry sequence 1010/1020 and PHYS.

****Students who intend to transfer to MTSU’s, ETSU’s or UTK’s secondary education program should follow the Mathematics AA/AS TTP and not the AST TTP. ETSU and UTK recommend and MTSU requires that students take education courses after transfer. Students who intend to transfer to TTU or UTM should take EDU 101.
