The following business degree at Nashville State Community College is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs: A.A.S. in Administrative Professional Technology.

The mission of the Administrative Professional Technology program at Nashville State Community College is to contribute to the community by preparing students with the office and management skills necessary to become productive and responsible leaders in today’s workplace.

The Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) in Administrative Professional Technology prepares individuals for employment in today’s dynamic workplace environment. Graduates will be equipped to adapt to the continual change that evolving technology demands.

Graduates of the program should be able to:

  • Demonstrate skill development in software applications.
  • Perform electronic and routine office procedures.
  • Prepare documents pertinent to an office environment.
  • Explain proper management protocol for office files.
  • Demonstrate use of specialty vocabulary through effective office communication.
  • Develop decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Transfer/Advising

The A.A.S. degree is designed to prepare a student for employment upon graduation. Some universities, at their discretion, accept some technical courses for transfer. A student who plans to transfer to a university should consult his/her advisor and the receiving university about transfer and articulation policies. Failure to do so could result in loss of transfer credits.

Medical Office Concentration


The Medical Office concentration prepares individuals for a variety of positions in today’s medical office environment, such as medical receptionists, medical insurance clerks, patient account representatives, medical administrative assistants, and physician or outpatient coders. The program provides the opportunity for skill development in the areas of software applications, office procedures, electronic health records, medical information management, communications, and coding.

Additional course requirements: The Tennessee Board of Regents requires that students either demonstrate the appropriate skill levels in math, reading, and/or writing before enrolling in college-level courses or enroll in appropriate co-requisite experiences with college-level courses to develop competency in those skills while performing college-level work. ACT/SAT scores, COMPASS test scores, or other relevant information determine whether a student needs to enroll in co-requisite courses in math, reading, and/or writing (English).
